Homer’s Epic Celebration of Civilization: 4 Lectures on The Odyssey

Please join Mark Schenker of Yale College for a four-part online lecture series on Homer’s epic masterpiece that will place the poem in the context of the Ancient Greek world and the Western literary tradition. His primary emphasis, however, will be on the Odyssey as a literary work of art, reanimated by our collective reading of it. Participants will encounter once again Homer’s masterpiece of barbarism and civilization, of adventuring and homecoming, whose hero is both a warrior and a husband.

Each lecture will focus on a six-book portion of the poem’s 24 books. Patrons are encouraged to read each portion in advance in any translation or to familiarize themselves with the events of the relevant portion in advance of attending each lecture. Here is the schedule:
