Virtual Chess Club

Event Details

Kids in Kindergarten through High School who already know the basics of chess are invited to join this virtual chess class.  Each week students will learn new strategies and then pair up using Chess.com to practice playing. Students must create a chess.com username prior to the start of class. To register for this program, please email aszabo@wiltonlibrary.org

Matthew Shirvell is the instructor for this class. Matthew has been playing chess since he was 3 years old and has been teaching chess for over 5 years.  He currently teaches group and private lessons in Ridgefield, Wilton, West Hartford, Bridgeport, Easton, Weston, Norwalk, South Norwalk, Storrs, and countless other towns.  He teaches new learners as well as experienced tournament players.

Matthew has played in and placed in major USCF tournaments including the 24th Annual Bradley Open (2019) and the 48th Annual Continental Open (2018).  His current USCF rating in 1726.  He also is a USCF tournament director who has helped run events such as the 2020 Connecticut State Grade Championships with over 90 participants.

Matthew Shirvell graduated with a degree in Mathematics and English from the University of Connecticut in 2020.
