Please join us as Yale's Mark Schenker returns to Wilton Library with a 4-part virtual lecture series on Homer’s epic poem
The Iliad. As a companion series to the Library program that Mark presented last June on The Odyssey, his lectures will again concentrate on the poem as a literary work of art, and will consider also how it contrasts and harmonizes with
The Odyssey as a masterpiece that engages both the destructive force of rage and the enduring power of civilization.
No charge for the program. This lecture is made
possible with the
support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance
registration required. Register online in order to receive the Zoom
session invitation link; those on the "wait-list" will receive a YouTube live-stream link. Please note: you will automatically be
registered for all four session in the series. Please email Michael
Bellacosa at mbellacosa@wiltonlibrary.org with any questions.
Each lecture will focus on a six-book portion of the epic’s 24 sections; Mark will be citing the Robert Fagles translation in his presentations. Patrons are encouraged to read, in any translation of their choosing, each portion in advance or to familiarize themselves with the events of the relevant six books in advance of attending each lecture. Here is the schedule:
- March 3 Books 1-6
- March 10 Books 7-12
- March 17 Books 13-18
- March 31 Books 19-24
Please note that we are skipping Wednesday 3/24.
