Please join us for a 4-week online literature seminar in which Judson Scruton will take us through a survey of some of the remarkable poetry and the political, psychological, aesthetic and religious thought of the Anglo-American poet W.H. Auden (1907-1973): poet, playwright, critic, and librettist. Poetry packet will be emailed in advance.

“We must love one another or die.” - from Auden's poem "September 1, 1939"

No charge for the program. This seminar is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration required. Please email Michael Bellacosa with any questions at mbellacosa@wiltonlibrary.org.

Widely considered one of the major English poets of the twentieth century, Auden has also been seriously criticized for, among other things, moving from England to the United States on the brink of WWII, and for repudiating some of his most successful and popular poems on the Spanish Civil War and the outbreak of the War. Auden’s exploration of the connection between private and public dynamics is profoundly relevant to our own times.

Judson Scruton M.A (The Johns Hopkins University, The Writing Seminars, specializing in poetry) has taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. In his career as an educator Judson has also directed publications, communications, public relations, and development at a variety of educational institutions in the U.S. and U.K. including the Newberry Library in Chicago.
