What’s “Modern” About The Modern British Novel? A Consideration of Four Novels by Four Authors. Virtual on Zoom Only.

5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Event Details

Please join us virtually on Zoom as Mark J. Schenker of Yale College returns to Wilton Library for a four-part series on great English fiction of the modern age. Following up on his June series on the Victorian novel, he will focus on four novels - one from each of the first four decades of the 20th century. He will consider the legacy of the Victorian Age and the transformations wrought by WWI; modernism’s intense interest in the value of the primitive; the fragmentation of a central culture and the rise of alienation; the problem of evil; and the influence of disciplines as varied as psychology and physics on the literary representation of character and reality.

Attendees are not expected to read or reread all or even any of the novels, but a familiarity with them will of course make the lectures more meaningful. Here are the novels for each week:
  • Oct  7 - The Secret Agent (1907), Joseph Conrad (1857-1924)
  • Oct 14 - Howards End (1910), E. M. Forster (1879-1970)
  • Oct 21 - Mrs. Dalloway (1925), Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)
  • Oct 28 - Brighton Rock (1938), Graham Greene (1904-1991)

No charge for the program. This lecture is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration required. Register online or call 203-762-6334. You will automatically be registered for all four sessions in the series. Please note: this will be virtual only, on Zoom.  Please email Michael Bellacosa at mbellacosa@wiltonlibrary.org with any questions.
