1959 in Jazz History with Gil Harel: Coltrane's Giant Steps

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Wilton Library
Brubeck Room
Please join us for the third program of our new four-part series with Dr. Gil Harel on the seminal jazz albums of 1959.The series will run as follows:

  • 3/20/24: Miles Davis' Kind of Blue
  • 4/10/24: Dave Brubeck's Time Out
  • 5/22/24: John Coltrane's Giant Steps
  • 6/18/24: Jazz Post-1959 Diverging Paths
The year 1959 was an exceptionally busy year for John Coltrane. Indeed, the iconic saxophone player and composer was featured prominently on Kind of Blue (the style of that record - modal jazz - would be one that Coltrane would revisit in subsequent years). Later in the year, he recorded an album that would become one of the most influential in the genre: Giant Steps. The name of the album proved apropos, as the leap into unprecedented chord progressions and improvisational patterns would raise Coltrane's status to that of a legend. Even today, multiple tracks on the record remain standard practice templates for aspiring saxophone players. Join Professor Gil Harel as we dive into the history and score of this massively influential album.

Registration strongly recommended. Register online or call 203-762-6334.

Gil Harel (PhD, Brandeis University) is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from the western classical repertoire to jazz. Previously, he served on the faculty at CUNY Baruch College (where he was awarded the prestigious “Presidential Excellence Award for Distinguished Teaching”). Currently, he is Full Professor of Music at CT State Naugatuck Valley, where he has been presented with the AFT "Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College" for 6 consecutive years. In 2020, he was honored with the coveted Connecticut Board of Regents (BOR) Teaching Award. At NVCC, Dr. Harel conducts the college chorale, a cappella ensemble, teaches music history and theory, and serves as musical director of theater productions.

Shakespeare on the Sound's Romeo and Juliet

6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Wilton Library
Rimer Room
Please join us for a special program just in time for Shakespeare on the Sound's annual summer production of Romeo and Juliet in Rowayton's Pinkney Park (June 12 –June 30). It’s their 28th year presenting Shakespeare's plays outdoors. Fun Facts About Romeo And Juliet:
  • Romeo and Juliet first meet on a Sunday evening. Four days later—on Wednesday evening—Romeo drinks poison and Juliet stabs herself. “Worst week ever,” as one Shakespearean scholar has put it.
  • Juliet is 13 years old. We don't know Romeo's age.
  • Dante first mentions the feud between the families in the early 1300's.
  • In 1662 Mary Saunderson made stage history as the first woman to play Juliet, 60 years after London audiences first saw Shakespeare's play with a boy playing Juliet.
Shakespeare on the Sound Education Director and Macbeth/Christmas Carol actor Nick Urda and board member/Shakespeare teacher John Love will guide you through Romeo and Juliet and, in an interactive presentation, hope to show you why Juliet and Romeo might be a more fitting title for the play. They'll also have you asking: were they really in love?

Senior Center Book Discussion: Great Society: A New History

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Non-Library Locations
Senior Center
Please join us as Michael Bellacosa leads a discussion of Amity Shlaes's Great Society: A New History.

In May 1964, Lyndon Johnson gave a pair of speeches in which he laid out his vision for a set of programs that would create a “Great Society” and most of this was enacted, implemented and later expanded by his successor Richard Nixon. Historian Amity Shlaes turns her analytical gaze to this period with a new history, which upends many longstanding views of this period of political idealism in America. Sixty years later, two generations of Americans have felt the impact of this ambitious program. Did the plan work - are the intended beneficiaries better off – was it worth the massive cost? Alan Greenspan wrote that “Great Society is accurate history that reads like a novel, covering the high hopes and catastrophic missteps of our well-meaning leaders.”

This group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834-6240. Comstock Community Center, 180 School Road, Wilton.

The Story of Chinese Musical Tradition: A Keeper of Asian Heritage Music

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Wilton Library
Brubeck Room
In celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, please join us for a special program about the Chinese musical tradition including musical instrument demonstrations and professional performance. Wilton residents Anchi Lin and her son, New York- and Boston-based conductor Julian Gau, will present information and demonstrate several traditional classical instruments from China. Two musicians from the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York will then perform on their chosen instruments:
  • Xiao-ran Eric Liu, an outstanding Bamboo Flute professional with an innovative approach when collaborating with western instruments
  • Rini Zhang: a virtuoso Erhu player and also an opera singer focuses on diverse styles of performing repertoire
Chinese classical music preserved many ancient musical elements from the historical Asia regions. Through the Silk Road, musicians and merchants from the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia brought their music and instruments to China. The capital of China, from around 200 BC until 14 AD, was like New York or Paris nowadays, where many traveled and brought their cultural heritages there. Over about 1600 years, Chinese musicians observed and preserved some of the instruments and musical elements that came from different parts of Asia, which ended up in what we now understand to be “Chinese classical music.” The heritage “Chinese” music is a story of continuous integration and infusion of diverse musical traditions from different parts of Asia.

Music is a powerful way to connect and to continue such historical memories from the past. Many of the nomadic tribes were lost through centuries of wars or political struggles; however, some glimpse of their musical heritages can still be traced from the instruments and genres kept by the traditional Chinese music tradition.

No charge. Co-sponsored by Wilton Library and the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York. Registration required. Please register online or call 203-762-6334. For further information, please contact Andrea Sato at asato@wiltonlibrary.org

Naturescape Your Yard with Karen Bussolini (Zoom & In-Person)

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Wilton Library
Rimer Room

We are excited to present gardener extraordinaire Karen Bussolini in the live Zoom program, "Naturescape Your Yard," on Thursday, May 30, at 6:30 p.m. This is a hybrid program; watch with others in the Rimer Room, or remotely on Zoom.

Naturescaping is landscaping with nature - attracting and sustaining wildlife, using native and and well-adapted plants, using resources wisely, and avoiding environmental pollution. But it also means landscaping like nature. Nobody plants, waters or fertilizes the forest or the prairie, yet they survive - beautifully - on their own. Naturescaping, also called ecological landscaping, creates self-sustaining (i.e. low-maintenance) landscapes that function like nature.

Karen will show how to create environment-friendly landscapes that work with nature to reduce maintenance and costs while increasing beauty and enjoyment. She will show inspiring examples of gardens from across the country that conserve resources (time and money as well as natural resources), foster diversity, sustain wildlife, provide food and incorporate environmentally sound practices to create sustainable yards.

"Naturescape Your Yard" is informed both by the work of notable ecologists and ecological designers and a deep understanding that everything comes from somewhere, everything goes somewhere and it's all connected. The presentation includes big-picture ecological thinking, nitty-gritty how-to tips and images of sustainable yards and gardens that serve the needs of the people who use them, look attractive, and function as small ecosystems.

Karen Bussolini has been a gardener all her life. She trained as a painter and was an architectural photographer before specializing in garden photography, writing, speaking and eco-friendly garden coaching/design. She is a NOFA (Northeast Organic Farmers Association) Accredited Organic Land Care Professional. Her garden has been featured in many publications, including Anne Raver’s feature, “A Connecticut Hillside of Feisty Beauties” in The New York Times.

"Gass shows her deep appreciation for and knowledge of Italian cuisine in this deftly written guide to small bites that pack a powerful flavor punch." -Library Journal

Combining simplicity and creativity, at its best, Italian cuisine charms us through a combination of the highest-quality ingredients, simple recipes tied to the specialties of each region, and the experience of being at the table.

In her second cookbook, Anna introduces the American audience to the complete range of spuntini, smaller bites enjoyed at in-between meal moments of the day, with recipes drawn from across the country. Also included is a chapter of delicacies from Italy's robust culture of street food.

Studded with gorgeous photography of finished dishes and Italian food markets, cafes, bars, and pasticcerie around Italy, this book will elevate your snacking game to the Italian ideal.

Born in Italy and raised in the U.S., the cuisine of Italy is part of Anna Francese Gass's soul. She graduated from the French Culinary Institute and began her career in the test kitchen at Food52. Her first cookbook, Heirloom Kitchen: Heritage Recipes and Family Stories from the Tables of Immigrant Women, was a collection of cherished family recipes from around the world published in 2021 and was featured on Today and Rachel Ray.
